Even as the police registered an attempt to murder case against unidentified persons for the murderous attack on local advocate Vineet Mahajan, his anguished wife has threatened to immolate herself if those responsible for the attack were not arrested immediately.
"If the arrests are not made in a day or two I will immolate myself, either on May 13 or 14, in front of the Medical Enclave residence of local bodies minister Anil Joshi, at whose behest my husband was attacked and seriously injured", Renu Mahajan stated while talking to the media here on Sunday.
Demanding justice from chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, she demanded that Joshi be sacked from the cabinet. She also sought his immediate arrest as non-bailable warrants are pending against him.
Herself an advocate, Renu Mahajan criticised the role of police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh for failing to provide security to her husband "despite being aware that his life was in danger".
She pointed out that in March, her husband along with fellow advocate Sandeep Gorsi had approached the commissioner for security, but nothing was done in this regard.
"The commissioner will be equally responsible for my immolation", she added.
She claimed that the attack, which left her husband and his brother Avneesh Mahajan injured, was well planned so as to prevent her husband from appearing in court on May 12 to oppose the anticipatory bail application of Joshi in three cases. Having got Gorsi out of the way after getting a 'fabricated' case registered against him, the next target was her husband, she added.
"The intention of the attackers was to kill her husband but by god's grace he survived. I have come out on the streets to fight for justice. Today our entire family is insecure and even my children are not going to school", she added.
Expressing faith in the justice system, she appealed to the judiciary to take 'suo motu' notice of the assault on her husband.
The two brothers were attacked with sharp edged weapons on Court Road on Saturday, shortly after Mahajan, at a press conference, expressed the fear that he could be the next target of Joshi and company.
His friend and lawyer, Gorsi along with Congress councillor Gurinder Rishi, were booked in an attempt to murder case on Friday night on the statement of a Joshi supporter, who claimed to have been attacked by the two.
Both Mahajan and Gorsi have dragged Joshi to court in the 'dual vote' case wherein bailable warrants were issued against the minister and eight of his relatives. In three other cases, including two defamation cases, non-bailable warrants have been issued against Joshi, whose anticipatory bail plea is to come up for hearing on Monday.
The CCTV footage of the attack on Mahajan, which is with the police, shows two persons armed with sharp-edged weapons attacking him. The footage clearly shows him being hit on the arm and then running away to save himself. The two attackers are also shown running and boarding an SUV in which several other persons are seated as they make their escape.
Congress threatens to gherao Joshi's residence
Coming out in open support of Mahajan and Gorsi, the senior Congress leadership has threatened to gherao the local residence of Joshi on May 13.
They have demanded immediate arrest of those responsible for the attack on Mahajan and withdrawal of the 'fabricated' case registered against Gorsi and Rishi. They also demanded suspension of Civil Lines SHO Varinder Kumar.
Congress MLAs Sukhbinder Raj Singh Sarkaria, Dr Raj Kumar Verka and OP Soni alleged that Joshi had let loose a reign of terror in the holy city.
"This is nothing but sarkari terrorism", stated Verka while talking to media persons.
BJP DUBS MAHAJAN EPISODE A 'DRAMA'
Local BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders described the attack on Mahajan a 'drama' and demanded a detailed inquiry into it.
"It is nothing but a drama. If a person has to attack someone, why should he inflict injuries on the arms, he would target the head", said mayor and BJP leader, Bakshi Ram Arora.
BJP district chief Naresh Sharma, SAD MLA Inderbir Singh Bolaria and SAD urban unit chief Upkar Singh Sandhu expressed similar views before the police commissioner.
Keen to show their support for Joshi, a number of SAD and BJP leaders, led by the mayor, met the commissioner and claimed that Mahajan had 'fabricated' the attack on himself just to influence the judiciary so that Joshi does not get bail on May 12.
The BJP leaders in the presence of the commissioner threatened to launch an agitation to counter threats of the Congress.
However, BJP national vice-president Laxmi Kanta Chawla has not only condemned the attack but she also went to meet the injured Mahajan and his brother at the hospital.
Meanwhile, the police finally registered a case against unidentified persons under sections 307, 326, 324, 323, 427, 148, 149, 120B and 341 of the IPC. The case was registered late in the night on Saturday after Mahajan recorded his statement with the civil lines police authorities in hospital.
As per the statement he mentioned that he recognised one of the attackers. He identified as BJP councillor Prabhjit Singh Rataul, a close confidant of Joshi. In the statement he has alleged that the attack on him was planned to prevent him from going to court on May 12 to oppose the bail plea of Joshi.
Reiterating that those responsible for the attack would be arrested soon, police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh said that while one of the attackers has been identified as Prabhjit Singh Rataul, the others are still to be identified.
On Renu Mahajan's allegations that security was not provided to her husband and Gorsi, he said, "Certain parameters have to be seen for providing security and we had also apprised the court of this aspect".
