Inmate dies in Faridkot jail; authorities rule out foul play

An inmate of Faridkot modern jail, Gurtej Singh (29), died under mysterious circumstances on Monday night. Gurtej of Chak Ram Singh Wala village in Bathinda, was serving life imprisonment in a murder case. He was shifted to the Faridkot jail on April 26, 2012.

An inmate of Faridkot modern jail, Gurtej Singh (29), died under mysterious circumstances on Monday night. Gurtej of Chak Ram Singh Wala village in Bathinda, was serving life imprisonment in a murder case. He was shifted to the Faridkot jail on April 26, 2012.


As per jail superintendent Tejinder Singh Mour, "Gurtej Singh complained of sickness at about 12am at midnight. He was immediately taken to a hospital. There is no foul play. He probably died of heart attack and the cause of death would become clear after the post mortem."

Jail authorities have handed over his body to forensic department of the medical college, Faridkot, in the presence of the executive magistrate.

Sources said Gurtej Singh was a good sportsperson and was shifted to Faridkot due to this reason. The Jaitu tehsildar is supervising post mortem and related processes.

2 booked for suicide bid

Two inmates of modern jail, Faridkot, tried to commit suicide on Monday night. Rajinder Singh, a resident of Moga, and Hoshiar Singh of Patiala, were injured after they banged their heads against iron bars in their barrack.

The jail authorities and city police took them to a hospital. The two have been booked under Section 309 of the IPC for attempt to commit suicide.

Jail superintendent Tejinder Singh Mour said, "The two are drug addicts and as we have prohibited drugs inside the jail, they were creating a trouble. They had already been booked in drug-related cases."
