The district consumer disputes redressal forum has directed United India Insurance Company Limited to pay Rs 16, 397 claim amount to a complainant along with compensation and litigation expenses.

Anil Kumar Sikka, a resident of Central Town locality, said he had obtained a health insurance policy from the opposite party, which started from February 28, 2012 to February 27, 2013. He said he had paid all instalments regularly to get himself insured. His family members were also covered under the policy.

He claimed that his son Harshit Sikka was admitted to a private hospital after he suffered severe pain in his left leg on advice for treatment on May 20, 2012. Harshit was discharged on May 21, 2012, with advice from hospital to take certain medicines and one week's rest.

After discharge from the hospital, Anil made a claim for amount of Rs 16, 417 for medical and surgical expenses to the company. He said he submitted completed claim forms with receipts reports to the insurance company but the company refused to pay the claim for medical treatment.

After hearing the complainant, the forum ordered the insurance company to pay the insurance amount to the former as he has valid insurance policy.

The forum also directed the insurance firm to pay interest at the rate of 9% per annum from the date of the order till the payment is made in the complainant's account.
