Jalandhar district police on Monday claimed to have busted a gang of auto-lifters also involved in drug-peddling with the arrest of three of its members and seizure of four stolen cars and ten motor-cycles, poppy husk and two country-made pistols.
The arrested accused were identified as Rasaal Singh alias Shalu of village Bilga, Lovepreet Singh of village Nakodar and Raj Kumar from Karnal district of Haryana, SSP Yurinder Singh Hayre told media persons here.
During preliminary investigation, it came to light that earlier also the trio were booked in as many as 20 cases in different districts and were declared proclaimed offenders in some cases, the SSP said.
Around 20 cases of auto-thefts in different districts, including Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Bathinda, have been solved with the arrest of the accused. Hayre said that the gang was formed by Rasaal when he was lodged in a jail.
One of the recovered Verna car was stolen from Bathinda, while a Maruti Swift was stolen from Ludhiana and a Maruti Alto from Phagwara, the SSP said.
The gang procured weapons from Saharanpur and narcotics from Rajasthan, the SSP said, adding that other gang members were identified as Onkar Singh, Jagdish Pal and his brother Mangat Ram and efforts to arrest them were on.
The number plates of all stolen vehicles were changed and bore registration numbers of Haryana, he said.
The SSP said that Rasaal and Lovepreet snatched vehicles at gun-point, while Raj Kumar arranged for fake registrations of stolen vehicles for further sale.
A case under Sections 482, 395, 394, 382 of IPC and 25, 54, 59 of NDPS Act was registered against the accused at Bilga police station.
