An international trout-angling ‘catch and release’ competition will start in Kullu this month to create awareness about the preservation of fishes in water streams in the district.

Nearly 60 anglers from Indian and abroad will take part in the contest to be held from April 11 to 13, said Trout Conservation And Angling Association, Kullu, president Shamsher Thakur.

Fish farming, which is a good source of income in Kullu district for locals due to its high demand, is under threat due to rising pollution in water streams in the district, said Thakur, adding that this was the reason why such a tournament was being organised.

Talking to Hindustan Times, association president Shamsher Thakur said that for the past many years, they had been organising the trout-angling competition in the district, in which the best catchers were awarded by the association but with the passage of time, the increase of pollution level in rivers and environment had concerned environmentalists, and the pollution might have long-term consequences in near future.

He said, “Due to this, we have decided to change the name of the ompetition to International Trout Angling ‘Catch And Release’ Competition, in which participants will catch trout fish in the Beas river and later release it.”

Association general secretary Krishan Sandhu told HT that many people dumped garbage in water streams, thus polluting the Beas river and harming the production of trout fish in the district.

The National Green Tribunal had recently expressed concern over the rise in pollution levels in the Beas.
