Irked over his elder brother not getting him a mobile phone from Dubai, a 20-year-old youth allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a canal in Sangrur sub-division.

The body of Harjinder Singh of Lohat Baddi village under Raikot police station was fished out of the canal under Sandaur police station on Friday — five days after he jumped into the canal on November 16.

Sandaur police station incharge Harjwinder Singh told Hindustan Times that kin of the victim told the police that Harjinder’s brother Sukhdev had promised him a mobile phone from Dubai.

But Sukhdev failed to bring him the phone, which irked Harjinder and he ended his life by jumping into the canal.

The police fished out the body from the canal near a bridge five days after the incident, he added.

The SHO said after the post-mortem, the body would be handed over to the family.

Police have started investigation under section 174 of the CrPC.
