Punjab Congress’s most vocal leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Friday joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the presence of party leaders here on Friday.
The former MLA from Bholath, in his resignation letter to Rahul Gandhi, has lambasted the state Congress leadership of Capt Amarinder Singh, alleging him to be in cahoots with the Badal family, adding that in case Amarinder came to power, he and his coterie would “loot the state just like the Badal-Majithia families, as they are nothing but two sides of the same coin”.
Khaira said he had given almost two decades of his youth to the Congress but was a disappointed man today as Rahul had “failed” to bring the changes he had promised. “You have totally succumbed to the arm-twisting tactics of such corrupt, tainted and feudal leaders and have compromised your values and ideology, merely to gain control of one state,” he said.
“The three seniormost leaders projected by you -- Amarinder, Ambika Soni and Lal Singh, will all be 75 during the 2017 assembly elections. Amarinder is facing two serious criminal cases of corruption -- the Ludhiana City Centre scam and the Amritsar Improvement Trust scandal. Reports of his wife Preneet Kaur and son Raninder Singh having stashed black money in Swiss accounts have also emerged. Lal Singh has been indicted by the Lokpal,” states the letter.
Addressing a press conference here, Khaira alleged that Amarinder was “hand-in-glove” with the Badal family. “These Congress leaders have been virtually playing a friendly match with the Akalis for the past nine years. They only want party workers to fight and feel the heat while they back each other,” he said.
“Between these two sets of politicians (SAD and Congress), elections in Punjab have become a Rs 10 crore venture for every candidate. Instead of those who deserved to be promoted they brought in sugar mill owners, liquor barons and real estate dealers as candidates and elections became a dirty money game,” he added.
In his resignation letter, Khaira goes on to give instances of the “quid pro quo” between the Badals and Amarinder. “It has been decided that neither will pursue the corruption or other cases against each other. As per the deep understanding, Amarinder while vowing to root out corruption within four weeks at the Bathinda rally, very cleverly and wilfully avoided to make any public commitment to take concrete action against the Badal clan,” he said.
“Amarinder purposely gave safe passage to Bikram Majithia for his involvement in the drug scandal. In response, the Badal duo ensured the victory of Preneet Kaur in the Patiala bypoll, while Amarinder directed his blue-eyed boy MLA Jeet Mohinder Sidhu to join the Akali ranks and made sure he won the Talwandi Sabo bypoll,” Khaira said, adding that he was joining the AAP unconditionally as a “party volunteer” as he was influenced by the honest and clean politics of Arvind Kejriwal and had been thinking of joining him for the past two years.
