Terming his removal from the post of jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib as unfortunate, Giani Gurmakh Singh said on Friday night that the decision will “further erode faith of Sikhs in the Akal Takht and the SGPC”. He was removed at the SGPC executive meeting at Fatehgarh Sahib earlier in the day over alleged violation of Sikh maryada (code of ethics).
“There is need to protect Sikhism, the maryada, the Akal Takht and SGPC; and whatever I have done was the utmost need of the hour,” he said, referring to his allegations against the Akal Takht jathedar and the leadership of the SAD that controls the SGPC.
“I would have welcomed my removal had the SGPC proven me wrong. There is a need to probe whatever I had said, and if an iota of it is proved wrong, then they have the right to punish me. Otherwise, punish those whom I have named in the controversy of Dera Sacha Sauda,” he said, reiterating his charges against the SAD’s Badals without expressly naming them.
He further said, “What is the logic of appointing jathedars if the SGPC and others do not follow them, and rather remove them at their whims and fancies?” He called Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh “a puppet of SAD leaders”.
“It’s time for Sikhs to rise and protect their supreme institutions,” he added.
