Jalandhar team of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) won the 38th Baba Pallaha Hockey Tournament on Thursday defeating Core of Signals (COS), an army team from Jalandhar Cantonment, by 5-4.
The three-day hockey tournament was organised by the Baba Pallaha Hockey Tournament Committee (BPHTC) and Baba Pallaha Sports Club at its stadium at Butala village near here. As many as 14 teams from sports academies, police and army had participated in the tournament.
Gurvinder Singh of ITBP received the best player’s award, while Paras Singh from COS got the best goalkeeper title.
International hockey player Ramandeep Singh Bal, who has played Asian Games in 2014 and a gold medalist, was the chief guest. He gave away the trophy and individual prizes to the winners.
Speaking on the occasion, he said, “To touch the sky, it does not matter where you come from? I have played in the same ground and never missed any opportunity to be a part of different tournaments, which boosted my confidence and slowly paved the way for bigger platforms to prove my love for the national game.”
He added, “The government, along with the sports department, must play an active role to popularise this game like cricket.”
