Applauding the efforts of residents of Maan village for showing courage to resist the "repression", Congress Working Committee member and former MP Jagmeet Singh Brar on Sunday warned of an agitation from June 1 in case the chief minister failed to resolve the issue.

He condemned the alleged intimidation of about 150 Congress workers in the village, alleging that this was done at the behest of the chief minister.

Brar, who visited the village to hear the grievances of the villagers, dared the state government to book him for violating section 144 in the village.

Brar said the Congress workers were simply protesting against booth-capturing by the Akali workers when they were attacked. He said the victims who needed to be heard were hounded out by the police.

"The villagers who protested against the terror created by the state government need to be applauded as they countered the Akali goons headed by local Akali leaders, who captured the booth during the recent polls. The police also performed the role assigned to them by the state government and quickly took away all burnt vehicles to suppress the truth," he said.

Brar said he would take up the matter with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

He announced to stage a protest in front of the chief minister's house at Badal village against the alleged atrocities on the people of Maan, saying, "I will also discuss the matter with state Congress president Partap Sigh Bajwa and the district Congress and will organise a protest march from Muktsar to Mann village on June 1."

Brar alleged that deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had a mindset that they could remain in power by suppressing Punjabis here.

Brar offered Rs 10,000 to the family of cancer-afflicted chowkidar Sadhu Singh.

Bajwa likely to visit village today
According to a report, state Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa, along with senior leaders of the Congress, is likely to visit Maan village on May 27.
