A 35-year-old inmate died under mysterious circumstances in the Malerkotla jail on Sunday. The victim has been identified as Nirmal Singh, an undertrial in a murder case, who was in the jail since May 2011.
Deputy superintendent of police (jails) GS Brar said after Nirmal Singh was found unconscious in his barrack, he was immediately rushed to the civil hospital, Malerkotla, where doctors declared him brought dead. The judicial magistrate also reached the spot and started an inquiry.
The victim's brother, Jaswant Singh, alleged that Nirmal Singh died due to negligence of the jail staff. "If timely treatment had been given to my brother, he might have been alive," he said.
Singh further alleged that his brother was fine when he met him in the jail last time and that he didn't complain of any ailment.
He added that they received information about his brother's death from Jagga Singh, sarpanch of his village, Sandor, around 8am, while the jail staff claimed that his brother was rushed to hospital around 6am.
A police officer, on the condition of anonymity, said the cause of the death would come to fore only after the post-mortem report comes
