Residents of Jaitu town, on Tuesday, staged a protest by blocking the Kotkapura-Bathinda road against the poor sewerage system and pitiable condition of the sanitation in the town.
The shopkeepers closed their shops to support the protest that continued for many hours.
A large number of local residents sat on a dharna on the main road at Chowk number 1 of the town and the traffic had to be diverted from other routes due to the dharna.
"The locals are facing a lot of problems due to the failure of the sewerage system in the town. Besides, insanitation is another problem they have to face as heaps of garbage can be seen lying on streets and road," said Jagtar Singh Rorikapura, a social worker.
The protesters only lifted the dharna after the senior civil authorities assured them that a machine would start work to clear the sewerage and all the garbage would be removed shortly from the town.
It is the second protest by the people of Jaitu town in a week to over the garbage in streets.
