Punjab Congress Legislature Party leader Sunil Jakhar, along with other leaders held a meeting at Gurdaspur Central Jail with Congress workers who had been lodged there under various 'false' cases.

The other leaders accompanying Jakhar were Gurdaspur MP Partap Singh Bajwa, Dera Baba Nanak MLA Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and local leader Raman Bahl. Jakhar went to meet these workers who were charged with crimes allegedly slapped on them at the behest of the ruling party leaders.

Harjinder Singh, Congress sarpanch of Goht Pokhar village, told Jakhar that he had been framed in false cases at the behest of Gurdaspur MLA Gurbachan Singh Babbehali for he had openly supported Congress candidate Raman Bahl in the last assembly elections.

Around 10 other Congress workers, mostly from Dera Baba Nanak assembly segment, told Jakhar that they had been booked for offences they had not committed. They alleged that their only offence was that they were the active workers of the Congress.

Jakhar assured them that he would raise the issue in the next assembly session.

Later, addressing a press conference at the house of local Congress leader Raman Bahl, Jakhar said he had attended a protest rally at Ajnala against the victimisation of the Congress workers by the ruling party leaders. He said the Congress would not sit silent over the alleged atrocities being perpetrated on the Congress workers by the ruling SAD-BJP.

He said the Congress would use all democratic means to highlight the highhandedness of the SAD-BJP government against the opposition. He said he was shocked to find a Congress supporter from Dera Baba Nanak lodged in the Gurdaspur jail on charges of hitting someone's buffalo with a stick.
