Countering the contention of industrialist Shital Vij that laying of sewerage close to his factory had led to the collapse of its building on April 15, the engineers' association of Sewerage Board said on Wednesday that mandatory distance had been maintained by officials concerned.

"It is ridiculous to blame the laying of sewerage as the reason for the building collapse since it was at least 15 feet away from the collapsed building," association president Satnam Singh said.

Moreover, he pointed out, the sewerage was laid two years ago. How was it possible that only one of the buildings in the vicinity got affected while the rest were intact, he wondered.

The fact that electricity poles and boundary walls of other factories in the area were not damaged were proof enough that the sewerage had not caused the collapse, he added.
