The police foiled escape attempt by an undertrial, Rajvir Singh (26) of Nathpur village of Batala, when he jumped off a prison van after breaking its windowpane on Saturday morning near BSF Chowk.

Lodged in the Kapurthala jail, Rajvir was being taken to a Jalandhar court for hearing. As he fell on the road after jumping off the police van, cops in the escort Gypsy following the police van nabbed him.

He was immediately taken to the Navi Baradari police station. Rajvir is facing trial for murder of his cousin, attempt to murder, cases under the NDPS Act and robbery in Jalandhar and Batala.

In a statement to the police, Rajvir said his mother was not well and he wanted to meet her.

Rajvir was arrested by the city police on November 10 last year for robbery at an ice-cream outlet in Urban Estate (Phase-2) that took place on October 28. The police had recovered an illegal .32-bore country-made pistol, three live cartridges and 170gm intoxicant powder from his possession.

Rajvir had robbed the ice-cream outlet owner of Rs 60,000 and left him seriously injured after opening fire at him. The closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage revealed that the youth fired with a country-made pistol and took away cash.

The injured owner, Ratikant Yadav (34), a resident of Industrial Area, was admitted to Doaba Hospital near Nakodar Chowk.

The four-minute video footage showed Rajvir barging into the outlet at 11.02pm and asking Yadav to hand over the cash.
