Highlight Story

With additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Parneet Bhardwaj proceeding on leave, the committee set up to inquire into the death of a newborn at civil hospital in Jalandhar has missed the deadline fixed for submission of the probe report.

The committee formed on the directions of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and headed by the ADC was supposed to submit the report by Saturday. The report would likely be submitted by Monday only since the ADC is away to attend a marriage in New Delhi.

Health services and family welfare director Dr Karanjit Singh maintained that the committee would submit its report only by Monday.

Besides the ADC, the panel includes Nakodar SDM Sumit Kumar, Civil surgeon Dr RL Bassan, Dr Sangeeta Kapoor (gynaecology) and Dr Jaswinder Kaur (pediatrics). The health services director is supervising the committee.

When contacted, SDM Sumit Kumar said that the ADC would return on Saturday and then would the panel hold a meeting regarding the matter.

Interestingly, the committee members do not seem to be sure about the status of the inquiry. When quizzed, the SDM said that the inquiry was complete as far as he was concerned and it was up to other members to decide if they wished to further look into the matter or not.
