A local court on Saturday sent the main accused, Ujagar Singh, and his wife Nirmal Kaur to two-day police custody for allegedly killing 28-year-old Manish Luthra of the Basti Shiekh area in Jalandhar.
Luthra, a Janak Nagar resident, was stabbed to death on Wednesday night when he was opposing sale of liquor in the locality.
Ujagar, who is facing liquor and drug smuggling cases, was arrested with his wife and their minor son from Goindwal Sahib in Tarn Taran district on Friday morning. The minor has been sent to the Hoshiarpur juvenile home.
Police said they were yet to recover the weapon used in the crime from the accused.
Ruling out the hand of liquor mafia behind the murder, police on Friday said the crime occurred following a tiff between the victim’s friend and Ujagar’s son the same night.
Manish had gone to settle a dispute between his friend Manu Kalra, a property dealer, and Ujagar’s son, said police.
The latter, meanwhile, called his father, who rushed there with armed accomplices and attacked Manish with sharp-edged weapons that led to his death.
