After a wait of one and half year, the city railway station is all set to get wi-fi facility. Ferozepur railway division has informed that the station will probably be wi-fi enabled by November 30.
The staff members were seen fixing internet wires at the platform on Friday. It is to be mentioned that Jalandhar railway station was among 500 railway stations across nation shortlisted to have wi-fi facility. Under Centrally sponsored Digital India Campaign at least 100 railway stations will be wi-fi enabled by the end of this year. Senior Division Signal and Telecom engineer Naresh Verma informed that along with Jalandhar railway station, work is going on at Ludhiana railway.
“We are running the service on a trial basis on both stations. After Jalandhar, Ludhiana will be the next,” said Verma.
Apart from these work is also going on Jammu-Tawi railway station. The Ferozepur division officials informed that in the first phase, they will be focusing on A-1 station of the division. It is to be mentioned Amritsar railway station was the first in t Ferozepur division to be wi-fi enabled while Jalandhar will be the second. The wi-fi facility in Amritsar railway station was launched on October 16. The whole project is being carried out under Railtel Corporation of India, a government of India enterprise. It focuses on providing broadband and multimedia networks across the country in addition to the modernisation of train operations and administration network system. Raitel Corporation of Indian has collaborated with Google for the work.
How will the Wi-Fi work?
For availing the facility at the selected railway station, one has to start the wi-fi feature in their mobile phones, and enter the passenger name record (PNR) number which will directly connect with the wi-fi facility. It is to be mentioned that one can only avail this facility for a certain time period only. As informed by the divisional railway official, the free wi-fi facility will be free for half-an-hour, after which amount will be charged according to the data used.
