A man was killed and another injured when a Tata Mini truck fell into a drain from a bridge at Duggal village near Patran town of this district close to Friday midnight.
The victim, Satnam Singh of Mahla village near Goryana in Jalandhar, was the truck's driver. Police rescued his helper, Bablu Singh, and moved him to a hospital. "Crashing through the guard rail of the bridge, the truck fell into the drain that remains dry usually but had some water in it after the recent rain," said assistant sub-inspector Sher Singh, adding: "The vehicles sank in the muddy water, killing the driver on the spot, while police and some locals were able to save his helper."
A crane was deployed to pull the truck out of water. Bablu has told the police that the driver lost control of the vehicle when they hit the bridge.
They had started from Haryana to reach Jalandhar by Saturday morning. A case under Section 304-A (causing death because of negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the Patran police station.
