A 28-year-old Jalandhar woman was allegedly molested by a conductor and driver of a Punjab Roadways bus and their two companions inside a bus, on its way from Jalandhar to Batala, around Kartarpur in Jalandhar district on Monday night.

The driver and conductor have been arrested while their two companions have absconded.

When her husband tried to stop the accused, they allegedly beat him up. None of the dozen-odd passengers present in the bus came to the rescue of the victim.

The molestation continued for almost an hour till the bus reached Batala, where the victim’s relatives roughed up the conductor and driver while their two companions had already alighted from the bus.

In her complaint to police, the victim said that on Monday night, around 8.30 pm, she, along with her husband, boarded the bus at the Jalandhar bus stand and when they reached near Kartarpur, the conductor started passing vulgar remarks against her. When she resisted, the accused, along with his two companions, who were allegedly under the influence of liquor, started misbehaving with her. They even tried to hold her arm.

“Hearing my calls for help, my husband, who was sitting at the back, came to my rescue but the miscreants overpowered him and started beating him up. Though I sought help from the other passengers, no one came to our rescue and the molestation continued till the bus reached Batala, where my relatives were waiting,” she added.

“As I had informed my brother on the phone, he, along with his friends, was waiting for us near Umarpura Chowk, but the driver did not stop the bus there, following which they chased the bus and intercepted it near Sukha Singh Mehtab Singh Chowk, where they roughed up the driver and conductor.”

A police team led by City SHO Gurbinder Singh reached the spot and arrested the driver and conductor.

A case under Sections 354, 354-A and 34 of the IPC has been registered against driver Dilbag Singh, resident of Banga, and conductor Shemsher Singh, resident of Ramdas, and their two companions.
