Former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Saturday hosted a lunch for party members before he went to attend the function where Partap Singh Bajwa formally succeeded him in the Punjab Congress chair.

It would have been just another lunch had Amarinder's close associates not publicised it to the media, clearly to send the message that he still enjoys confidence of several MLAs and office-bearers of the party.

In attendance were 20 of the 45 Congress MLAs and many leaders who had unsuccessfully contested the assembly polls last year.

The list of MLAs included CLP leader Sunil Jakhar, Lal Singh, Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi, Arvind Khanna, Ajaib Singh Bhatti, Sukhi Randhawa, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Joginder Singh Panjgrain, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, Harchand Kaur, Mohammad Sadique, Amrik Dhillon, Kewal Dhillon, Rana Gurjit Singh, Ramanjit Singh Sikki, Surinder Dawar, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Charanjit Singh Channi, Hardayal Kamboj and Guriqbal Kaur.

Punjab Youth Congress president Vikram Chaudhary, state chief of party wing National Students' Union of India (NSUI) Gobind Khatra, state Congress vice-presidents Rana KP Singh, Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, besides Amarjit Singh Samra, Chaudhary Santokh Singh, Jassi Khangura, Jagbir Brar, Kushaldeep Singh Dhillon, Harminder Gill, Dharampal Agnihotri, Love Kumar Goldy, Makhan Singh, Ajit Singh Shant, Chiranji Lal Garg and Milkiat Singh Dakha were present too.

Amarinder drove down to the party office along with Jakhar, Lal Singh, Kewal Dhillon, Rana Sodhi and Khanna to attend Bajwa's installation, where he promised support to Bajwa.
