The body of 20-year-old Harwinder Singh, a resident of Paniyali Kalan village in Balachaur sub-division, was found floating in the Bist-Doab canal near the village in the wee hours of Monday.

Harwinder had been missing since November 6, when he went to his part-time job at Tonsa village. His family had also lodged a police complaint at Kathgarh police station on November 8.

Police sources said that the Harwinder was found murdered and preliminary investigation had revealed that the victim's affair with a girl from the same village was most probably the cause that led to the murder.

The body was so badly decomposed that there was little chance of establishing its identity.
However, family members identified Harwinder from his clothes and identity card. The victim's face and legs were tightly wrapped by pieces of clothes and a belt.

Speaking with Hindustan Times, Rashpal Singh, the father of deceased, had recently returned from Abu Dhabi on November 1, where he used to work as labourer and did not know the company Harwinder was keeping and whether or not he was in a relationship with a girl. He added that he received a call of a body found in the canal on Monday morning.

He added that his brother had identified Harwinder from his clothes and identity card. The aggrieved father has demanded immediate arrest of the accused in the case.

Kathgarh police station SHO Gurinder Pal Singh said that there were some unconfirmed reports that Harwinder had a love affair, which the police is yet investigate. He added that the that post-mortem had been carried out by medical board at Balachaur civil hospital and the report was yet to be received. The body had been handed to the family members for cremation.

A case has been registered under sections 302, 201 and 34 of IPC against unknown persons.

Police sources said that it had picked up some persons from the village and were asking searching questions about the affair of Harwinder. Harwinder Singh was doing a mechanical engineering diploma from a leading private college at Railmajra in Balachaur and was also doing a part-time job at Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd at Tonsa village in Balachaur.

BJP rivalry at work

Former minister and chief minister's political adviser Tikshan Sud has ruffled feathers by offering the Adamwal panchayat a chance to get the village merged in the municipal corporation after it was recently adopted by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha member Avinash Rai Khanna under the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY).
