If some of the 34 candidates for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha (reserve) seat don’t withdraw, it’ll be a hassle for the administration. The electronic voting machine (EVM) can accommodate only 15.

With the option of voting “none of the above” (NOTA) introduced, the number of buttons on single device goes up to 16. The district administration will have to requisition more EVMs to conduct the poll. It has arrangements for only 1,814, and can get 10% more in emergency.

On the last day of nomination, 19 candidates entered the race, taking the figure to 34 in Jalandhar. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the seat had 19 contestants and still they had demanded more EVMs from the Election Commission. “If there is no withdrawal or nomination rejected, we’ll have to write to the state election commission for another 1,814 20-button EVMs before April 30,” said tehsildar Karnail Singh.

The first EVM training of the polling staff is after April 12. More than 18,000 government employees, excluding the police, are on election duty on April 30.

Of Jalandhar’s 15.49-lakh voters (adding more than 35,000 new voters), 7.24 lakh are women. On Monday, the administration has organised an awareness rally to increase the voter participation.

AAP candidatefiles nomination
On the last day of nomination on Wednesday, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Jyoti Mann filed her papers along with 18 others. She entered the district election office in a simple manner to do the formality.
