5 held with opium worth Rs. 50 lakh

The district rural police claims to have busted a gang of smugglers by arresting five persons.

Police arrested them from Chak Kalan village while they were carrying 20 kg opium in a truck (PB-08-BZ-7457) hidden in the boxes of frooti soft-drink and in Mahindra Scorpio (PB37-F-7676).

The market value of opium is estimated to be worth Rs. 50 lakh.

The accused has been identified as Harbans Lal, resident of Saifabad village, Kulwinder Singh, resident of Phillaur, Harjit Singh resident of Rasulpur, Pinder Singh resident of Sang Dhesiyan and Stephen resident of Nurpur village.
 
The kingpin of the smugglers, Harbans Lal alias Lalli was already booked by police in different cases under NDPS act and was organised the gang of supplying Opium in the villages around Nakodar, police sources revealed.
 
Revealing the modus operandi, senior superintendent of police Yurinder Singh Hayer revealed, "These smugglers used to get delivery of opium from Indore and transport into Punjab using extra empty battery filled with contraband installed in their vehicles adding that at times they use to enter the state via Rajasthan."
 
Police have booked them under different sections of Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985.
