The management of AB Sugars (distillery division) in Randhawa village has been given another 15 days to comply with environmental norms and make functional an effluent treatment plant, else the distillery would be sealed permanently.

Passing an interim order, Dasuya sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Barjinder Singh, on Thursday, also directed the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) chairman to ensure implementation of the order.

Acting on the complaints of villagers that the distillery had rendered the ground water of the area unfit for consumption, the SDM had issued a notice to the mill and the PPCB under Section 133 of CrPC, asking them to file their responses on February 11.

The mill management filed an interim reply and raised an objection that since the PPCB had already issued them a notice under Section 33-A of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, it was irrelevant to summon them under Section 133 CrPC.

After clearing their objection, the mill management was asked to submit a reply on February 22. Not finding the reply satisfactory, the SDM fixed a hearing for February 28.   On Thursday, counsels for the mill and PPCB appeared and sought some more time to comply with the orders. They have been asked to come up with a final reply within 15 days.
