Congress spokesman Sukhpal Khaira has criticised Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal for politicising the issue of wealth tax.

"Badal is now raising a hue and cry and politicising the issue of wealth tax to garner votes. It is a matter of record that the first notices were issued during the NDA regime, headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee regime, and then also Badal was the CM. However, he failed to take up the issue with the CM.

"It is only when it has come to light that assessment notices have been sent to the SAD leaders and those close to the Badals, the Nagra brothers, that an emergency session has ben convened to take up the issue? Had Badal and Vajpayee dealt with the issue at the beginning, the Nagra brothers would not have lost in the hihg court as well as the supreme court."

PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa had met finance minister P Chidambaram along with a delegation of MPs, who had assured dropping of the controversial clause from the amendment proposed in the Finance Bill 2013, Khaira added.

He added that the Badals and the SAD never even thought of organising a special meeting of the Vidhan Sabha on the law and order situation even as goons were fearlessly killing policement in uniform and rapes had become a common occurence.

He added that is was surprisign that a government which did not even call a meeting of the legislature, even when the state's finances touched an alrming low was meeting to discuss the wealth tax issue.
