Inaugurating the project on Tuesday, environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal appealed to the communities to take their welfare into own hands. In missions accomplished with only community's help, he counted the restoration of the sanctity of the Holy Bein rivulet in Kapurthala district foremost. "Collective community effort can do miracles," he said.

Under NRI (non-resident Indian) matching grant scheme, of the total Rs. 1.5-crore cost of development work at Dhahan Kaleran, 25% has come from the villagers and Canada-based expatriate Baljinder Singh. Speaking on the occasion, the NRI said his dream to keep his native village clean in all respect.

"If the water is clean and there is a proper drainage system, 75% of the diseases are curbed," said Baljinder Singh. "After the completion of this project, all three dirty-water ponds in the village will be gone and each house will be connected with sewer lines," he added.

The village has 250 houses and a population of nearly 1,200, mostly agriculture dependent. "The similar model was implemented in the nearby village of Doulatpur, following which, the villagers and the family of Baljinder Singh whole contributed heartedly to the project at Dhahan Kaleran that will be completed in 16 months," said Kulwinder Singh, secretary of the village's Guru Nanak Mission Medical and Educational Trust.

District planning committee chairman Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi, block samiti member Jaswarinder Singh, and sarpanch Rachhpal Kaur were present at the inauguration on Tuesday.
