The deceased was identified as Sukhwinder Singh alias Saabi, a resident of Mothanwala village near here. The condition of his friend Raj is still critical.

Both were attacked by parents, relatives of the 23-year- old girl, who was reportedly having a love affair with the deceased for over last one year.

The girl had allegedly gone missing from her home on Friday late evening and both of them had gone to her Talwandi Bhai village to drop her home on a motorbike when they were attacked and beaten up.

Raj, who suffered injuries in the attack told mediapersons, "At around 3 am on Saturday, we were going to drop the girl at her home. It was a routine affair between Saabi and the girl and parents of both were familiar with this. I asked Saabi to drop the girl outside the village, but he was interested to drop her near her home. When we entered the village, nearly 50-60 people were waiting for us. As soon as we reached there, they attacked us with hockey sticks and other weapons. We tried to flee from the spot but the motorbike slipped from the muddy road and we fell on the ground and suffered severe injuries in the attack. However, the police reached the spot and rescued us."

However, later on Saturday morning, on the complaint filed by the girl, Fattudhinga police booked the boy and his friend under sections 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her for marriage), 376 (rape), and 34  (act done by several persons) of the IPC.

But, after the death of boy on Saturday night, the police also booked the father of the girl Jaspal Singh and other unidentified persons under section 302 (murder) and 34 of the IPC.

Meanwhile, parents of the deceased described the registration of a case against the boys as unwarranted, biased and done under political pressure.

"How far it is logical to describe it as rape as the boy was going to drop her home? Do rapists drop the girl at home after committing rape? This was a routine between the girl and the boy and everybody had accepted the relationship. The girl, under pressure of her parents, filed the complaint. Police should have investigated the matter first before booking  Saabi," said Kamaljeet Singh, brother- in-law of the deceased.

Station house officer (SHO) of Fattudhinga police station Sukhwinder Singh said, "Both were having an affair and used to meet each other. We reached the spot when the boys were being beaten up by the villagers and managed to free the boys from the villagers and later admitted them to the civil hospital at Kapurthala."

"A case has been registered against the father of the girl and others who had beaten up both the boys. After investigations, next action would be taken in the case," he added.
