The cameras would remain functional 24X7 and would be directly attached with the police control room.

Municipal council (MC) president Shiv Sood said that a request was received from the police to install surveillance cameras at strategic points which was accepted by the house and 13 places were identified for this purpose.

"We have sought a project report from the experts following which tenders would be floated for the devices", Sood said, informing that places outside prominent educational institutions had been included in the project.

He said that monitoring and maintenance of the cameras would be done by the police department. Senior superintendent of police Sukhchain Singh Gill said that for a long time the need to install close circuit cameras was being felt to keep a watchful eye on the persons on the wrong side of the law. "The cameras will not only help resolve traffic related issues but also help police in tracking down criminals", he said.
