Even as the process for registration of eateries under the Food Safety and Standard Act (FSSA) has started nearly 18 months back, the canteen situated inside the civil hospital premises here is yet to apply for the licence.

Even as another deadline for registration and licensing of eateries under the Act ended on February 4, the food safety and standards authority of India has now extended the time limit of the same to another year up to February 4, 2014, for the food business operators to obtain licence or registration under the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food business) Regulations 2011.

Although the first deadline was extended from August 5, 2012, to February 4, 2013, still the district health authorities failed to do the needful to comply with the Act guidelines.

"It is strange that the district health officials, who are holding camps, asking shopkeepers and other outlet owners to apply for licence or registration, have forgotten to procure licence for their own canteen," said a patient at the civil hospital on the condition of anonymity.

District health officer Dr Ashwani Sondhi said the licence for the canteen would be procured soon. "The canteen owner would be asked to apply for the same. We thought that it's an internal matter of the department and can be done afterwards," he said.

Under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2011, all food businesses with an annual turnover of above Rs. 12 lakh require licences, while those having a turnover below Rs. 12 lakh need to get registered.

The fee for registration is Rs. 100, while it varies between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 5,000 for getting a licence.
