Even as chief minister Parkash Singh Badal announced to provide free power supply to the ancestral house and memorial park of Bhagat Singh on the martyrdom day in Nawanshahr last year, electricity bills are still being sent in the name of martyr’s properties.
The pending electricity bill for the museum has reached Rs. 2.50 lakh while the bill of memorial park is over Rs. 2.25 lakh.
A week before the martyrdom day last year, the Powercom had disconnected the electricity supply to park and the ancestral house of the martyr.
The district administration officials had apprised the chief minister of lack of funds for maintenance of the martyr’s ancestral house and memorial park when he was addressing a function at Khatkar Kalan village on March 23 last year.
The officials even spoke about their inability to pay electricity bills for both the properties.
Badal then announced that the state government would provide free power supply to these properties. The chief minister had criticised the Powercom for disconnecting power supply to the ancestral house and the memorial park.
The Nawanshahr administration had deputed staff to remove garbage from the park and had painted the ancestral house a few days before the martyrdom day. But nobody bothered about the properties thereafter.
Banga horticulture development officer Narinder Kalsi said, “We do not have funds to pay the pending bill (Rs 2.25 lakh) of the park as the department has not received any grant from the government.”
The horticulture development officer further said he had spoken to Nawanshahr deputy commissioner Anindita Mitra and Banga sub-divisional magistrate about this and they had taken up the issue with the state government.
“I have already spent Rs. 2-3 lakh from my own pocket on the maintenance the park in the past two years,” said Kalsi.
Banga sub-divisional magistrate MK Arvind said, “We have already taken up the matter with the government and requested to issue a notification in this regard.”
The government will hopefully issue notification on the free power supply to properties once the election code of conduct is lifted, the Banga sub-divisional magistrate further informed.
