Gurkanwal Kaur, former Cabinet minister and daughter of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, has held the party leadership at the state and at the Centre responsible for the stunning defeat of the Congress in all four assemblies.

Addressing mediapersons here on Monday, she said, “It is strange that the party had failed to learn lessons from the earlier defeats in different states. Those who are Congressmen by heart and heritage are being ignored”

“Like in Punjab, the party repeated its mistakes in Delhi. They totally ignored the common man. Damini rape was the changing point in the Delhi politics. Sheela Dikshit failed to ensure the security of women there and the Aam Admi Party sensitised the voters and won seats,” she added.

Gurkanwal Kaur was sidelined by the Congress in 2012 Assembly elections for Jalandhar cantonment  assembly seat and the ticket was given to Jagbir Brar, who joined the Congress after changing loyalty from the People Party of Punjab.

“Brar has nothing to do with the Congress. Such type of leaders are opportunists but the party preferred him and sidelined me,” she said adding that, “such things are being repeated again and again by the party and these are not the good indicators for the health of the party.”

Gurkanwal said the party should improve its functioning style before the forthcoming parliamentary elections or be ready to face music. Referring to Punjab, she said, “Despite the change in the state leadership, I had never been called for any talks by party president Partap Singh Bajwa and I am feeling ignored.”
