Congress leader MP Singh Goraya, who had joined the party just before the assembly polls in 2012, shifted his loyalty to the BJP on Wednesday. Goraya, a dalit leader, who has also been associated with BSP, was welcomed to the BJP by state party chief Kamal Sharma.

Sharma claimed that the party would be strengthened in the Doaba region with Goraya's presence.

In the BSP, Goraya held senior posts, including that of state vice-president and general secretary and unsuccessfully contested assembly elections twice on a BSP ticket from Nakodar assembly segment.

Last year, just before the assembly elections, he joined the Congress. On his shift to the opposite side: "I am impressed with the ideology of BJP. Joining the Congress was a big political mistake."
