The two-hour 'chakka jam' protest, organised by the district Congress on Thursday, saw a good number of party workers holding dharnas at two key points against revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia.

Local MLA and district president Sunder Sham Arora led the protesters at Parbhat Chowk, who blocked traffic from Jalandhar and Tanda sides, whereas PPCC general secretary Raj Kumar and his team laid a siege on the Chandigarh bypass.

To keep the protesters busy and entertained, Raj Kumar had arranged a 'nukkad natak' (street play), which was a satire on the drug mafia and their modus operandi.
Commuters were, however, put to great inconvenience on outer roads of the but, thanks to a well-conceived plan by the police, no traffic snarls were witnessed inside the town. vehicles, which could not be diverted through village routes, were detained at different places on the bypass so that they did not clog the protest sites.

Heavy police force had been deployed to avert any untoward incident.

Congress workers expected preventive arrests, but no such thing happened. Interestingly, the district magistrate had renewed the prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC, banning assembly of five or more persons at a public place without permission, but as always, the violation was overlooked.
Arora said they were ready to court arrest as the issue (of drug trafficking) was very grave. "The government is pushing our youth into drug addiction. Most unfortunately, members of the ruling dynasty were involved in the drug trade," he said. Justifying the demand for a CBI probe into Majithia's alleged involvement in the drug trade, Arora said that truth must come out.

"There is every reason to believe druglord Jagdish Bhola. If he (Bhola) had to lie, he could have named the chief minister, the deputy chief minister or any other member of the cabinet, why only Majithia," he asked.
