Though otherwise a quiet constituency, Jalandhar made news more due to the infighting within the SAD-BJP. The Tinu-Hans episode had made Punjab deputy chief minister and Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Badal to intervene and sort out things before any damage was done.
A “fanatic” and a “selfish leader” were two of the terms Hans had used for Tinu, but he had stressed that he won’t be leaving the SAD for not being considered for the ticket, “even though I got an offer to join the Congress from its state chief Partap Singh Bajwa”.
“Tinu is fanatic leader who can’t see our society united. His role has always been of a spoiler for our social fabric. Be it the Talhan episode where he led the mob of a particular community against Jats, or abuses hurled by him for Lord Ram openly or creating ruckus while remaining in the BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party),” Hans had said.
He had even accused Tinu of distributing pamphlets against him in 2009 in a bid to divide the Balmiki community (from which Hans belongs) “just to defame me", and that was “the reason behind my defeat”.
“But it’s an irony that a leader who backstabbed the party in 2009 has been awarded with the chair of the Scheduled Castes commission, then made MLA; and has now got the LS ticket. What kind of party system is this?” he had quipped.
Tinu reacted sharply.
“By levelling such allegations against me, Hans has again shown his real face. No other act can be cheaper than this. He has attacked me when I am in the US to perform the last rites of my father who passed away recently. It is highly condemnable,” Tinu had said.
Tinu also termed Hans a “blackmailer of the highest order and coward leader”.
“I was allotted party ticket on February 18. People can well gauze his motive behind raking up the issue of my candidature after a month. That, too, when I am not in India,” he had told HT.
The CPS, who is MLA from Adampur, said the party had given him ticket after thorough analysis of his credentials. “If Hans has the guts he should oppose my candidature before SAD chief Sukbhir Badal, who has allotted me the ticket. By levelling baseless allegations against me, he is just trying to blackmail the party high command to get some benefit,” he had exclaimed.
Tinu had also condemned Hans’ allegation of terming him a “fanatic” leader. “I am not sure if Hans knows the meaning of fanatic. He is being taught by a few of my opponents. I have always had the highest regard for all communities.”
