A local court on Friday directed the police to register a case under Section 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) and 294 (obscene acts or songs to the annoyance of others) of the Indian Penal Code against Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, actor Ranveer Singh, actress Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of Hindus in the movie 'Ram Leela'. The complaint was filed by activists Ashutosh Sharma, Narinder Parshad and Sandeep Kumar in the court of judicial magistrate (1st Class) Mahesh Kumar which directed the city police to lodge the first information report (FIR), investigate and report the matter.

In the complaint which was filed before the release of the film, the complainants said that the film title suggested it to be a religious film whereas it promoted obscenity and insulted Hindu deities. After hearing the arguments of petitioners' counsel RP Dhir, the court directed the city police to lodge an FIR. City station house officer Prem Kumar said police would act on receiving court orders.

It is noteworthy that a similar case was registered in a Jalandhar police station on September 26 against which the film director and the actors have filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana high court. The matter is to come up for hearing on December 3.
