Crime against women: focus on awareness

Paramjit Kaur Landran, chairperson of the Punjab State Commission for Women (PSCW), said here on Friday that the commission would focus on combating crime against women and their problems by organising awareness campaigns across the state this year.

The commission, she said, favoured that self-defence and women rights should be introduced as a subject in schools and colleges and they would write to the Punjab education department in this respect.

She said, "Apart from holding camps to redress their grievances in every district, the commission will organise statewide awareness campaigns to empower women and awaken them about their rights the required measures for their safety".

The commission would also hold meetings with the district's security officers, protective homes in-charges, women cell officers and Nari Niketan members frequently to solve the cases, she added.
She said the PSCW has solved more than 7,700 cases in the state.

"We had also resolved the grievances and problems of women prisoners at central jails," she said.
