With the financial help from the family of a UK-based NRI, who died in 2009, the Raipur village panchayat started different developmental works worth `83.2-lakh in the village on Thursday.

Member of Shiromani Guruduwara Prabhandak Committee, Paramjeet Singh Raipur, in the presence of relatives of NRI and village panchayat members started the works.

"After Gurmeet Singh's death, his family had given `21-lakh to the village panchayat. We deposited this money in the NRI scheme of the state government,"said Raipur.

"We have `47.65-lakh for the stadium, `14.12-lakh for boundary wall and construction of shed in the village cremation ground, `19.85-lakh for constructing concrete streets and `1.40-lakh for the maintenance of the village park,"Raipur added.

"Most of the Doaba people are settled abroad and they are eager to serve their native lands. We need to invest their money in different NRI schemes and draw four- times more money,"he added.

"We have also received the sanction for laying sewerage works worth `2.5 crore in a scheme of World Bank and the panchayat had deposited its share of `2.09-lakh,"Raipur said.
