As the hunger strike by their president entered its 12th day on Thursday, Elementary Teachers' Training (ETT) teachers from Jalandhar and Kapurthala held a protest and hunger strike outside forest minister Chunni Lal Bhagat's house here.

Beant Singh, state committee member, ETT Teachers' Union, said their demand to merge zila parishad and nagar council schools with the education department was still pending.

"As many as 5,752 schools in the state with six lakh students are currently functioning under zila parishads and nagar councils. These are being run under no proper system, and for the past eight years, they had been running this way," he added.

They also protested against the police for "forcibly admitting" union president Jaswinder Singh Sidhu, who is on an indefinite hunger strike, to the hospital.

They said if anything happened to him, they would intensify their protest and would not allow any minister to address the gathering during the Patiala and Talwandi Sabo bypoll. The union members would also gherao the houses of state ministers on August 3. They alleged that the state government had paid no heed to their issues.
