HT had highlighted woes of Jyotsna who had alleged that, she along with her mother were running to pillar to post for police action against Harmeet and others since 2012 but they had not taken any action despite German embassy's confirmation that he had remarried  in that country.

Harmeet Singh, his father Varyam Singh and mother Gurwinder Kaur were booked under Sections 495 (same offence with concealment of former marriage from person with whom subsequent marriage is contracted),  498 A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).

Jyotsna, had alleged she was married to Harmeet, originally, a resident of Gopal Nagar, who now lives in Germany, on October 27, 2010.

She added that the dowry demands of her in-laws were fulfilled but within a month of marriage, her in-laws started taunting her for bringing inadequate dowry and demanded a car.

"I came to know that Harmeet had married and also got divorced in Germany. It was confirmed by the German embassy," Jyotsna said.

"My mother and relatives arranged `6 lakh after Harmeet promised that he would take me to Germany but didn't do so. Rather he threatened me by calling from Germany and pressured to take the complaint back," she added.

Jyotsna's mother Amrita had alleged that for last one year police have not initiated any action in this case.

She had further alleged that Jyotsna's in-laws had good rapport with local politicians due to which, police was not registering case against them.

No 'man's' land
Punjab alone accounts for nearly 15,000 women deserted by their NRI husbands and estimated 30,000 women in the country. In Punjab, the NRI grooms are notorious for deserting wives in India. Punjab people are also obsessed about marrying NRIs and going abroad.

According to a new provision of state government to fight against this menace an NRI marrying a woman of Punjab will have to fill a special form when the marriage is registered. All the information about the groom will be kept in record with the local officials so that he can be contacted if problem arises.
