The fissures in the alliance of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the municipal corporation came to the fore on Wednesday when senior deputy mayor Kamaljeet Singh Bhatia and deputy mayor Arvinder Kaur Oberoi skipped the Finance and Contracts Committee meeting of the civic body.

Bhatia and Oberoi, who belong to SAD, are reportedly annoyed over the alleged 'dictatorial' style of functioning of mayor Sunil Jyoti of BJP.

Sources said that Bhatia even had complained to the SAD top brass against the mayor's working style.

“Today's absence was not a boycott. I was stuck somewhere. But, yes, we are feeling ignored and we are discussing the issue at party level. Neither me nor deputy mayor was taken into confidence by the mayor while taking important decisions. The mayor decides and informs us or sometimes, we even get information through media,” Bhatia said.

“We never faced such a humiliation while working with the previous mayor, who too was of the BJP, but this time, we are being ignored completely. We are alliance partner in the corporation but are feeling alienated in important tactical matters,” he said, adding that, “whether or not to boycott the corporation proceedings, the decision would be taken at the party level.”

Bhatia had also not attended the February 18 meeting of the House.

Meanwhile, mayor Sunil Jyoti, when contacted by HT, ruled out any differences with the SAD members. “There is nothing like boycott. As per my information, senior deputy mayor was busy somewhere. In the meeting held on February 18, he was at Moga, I was told. We are giving proper information to all the members by circulating meeting agenda prior to the meeting.

Bhatia may be having some grudges against me, but the deputy mayor did not abstain from the meeting deliberately.”

Deputy mayor Oberoi didn't attend to the calls made on her mobile number 98150-95300.
