The district police, on Tuesday, claimed to have busted a gang of thieves that used to steal dual trans-receiving units (DTRUs) from mobile towers, batteries and feeder cables.

The gang had caused a loss of over `50 lakh to mobile tower companies, claimed senior superintendent of police (SSP) Narinder Bhargav.      On a tip-off, the Tanda police raided a hideout at Miani and arrested five members of the gang, who were identified as Manmohan Singh of Chak Jindan, Jalandhar, Ranjit Singh of Kathu Nangal, Kuldip Singh of Jandiala Guru, Sandeep Singh of Talwara and Ramji of Uttar Pradesh.

Three of their accomplices allegedly escaped from the site. A case has been registered against them.     The SSP revealed that four of the arrested youths had been working in various telecom companies. "They knew the value of the electrical devices. They would identify their targets during the day and strike during the night", he added.

He revealed that the police had recovered 16 DTRUs and 15 batteries from their possession along with a Tata Indica.

"The gang was active throughout the state. We are trying to nab their accomplices," the SSP said.
