Police said Harbhajan Singh was found lying unconscious in his office room that was bolted from inside. His family was informed immediately.

The door was forced open after his daughter arrived. Thereafter, Singh was rushed to a private hospital, where he was declared brought dead, police said.

His wife, Harbhajan Kaur, handed over a suicide note to the police in which the JE allegedly held district development and panchayat officer Sarabjit Singh Walia, block development and panchayat officer Bhagwan Singh and sub-divisional officer Navdeep Singh Gill responsible for creating the circumstances leading to his suicide.

Kaur told Hindustan Times that her husband was upset for the past few days owing to “harassment” by the senior officials.

“He rang me at around 9am and then at 10.30, we got a call from the office that he had locked himself in the room. When our daughter went there, he was found unconscious,” Kaur said, adding that he had apparently consumed poison.

“He even wrote down the names of the officials responsible for abetting the suicide on the office wall,” she alleged.

The investigation officer (IO) told HT that a case under section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code has been registered. They were investigating the contents of the suicide note, and if found genuine, action would be taken against the officials, he added.

“We have been provided with the photocopy of the suicide note and are looking for the original one,” the IO said, adding that the body had been sent to civil hospital for post-mortem.

The deceased, in his suicide note, urged local MLA Pargat Singh to help his family get all dues, including pension, from the government, sources said.
