A day after Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans revolted against the Akali nominee from Jalandhar, he was made to face the music for a while and change his tune.

In a strong message to Hans that the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) would tolerate no rebellion during the Lok Sabha elections, Punjab Police were ordered to withdraw his security, and he had to meet party president Sukhbir Singh Badal in Chandigarh on Friday to get it restored.

In a confidential two-line letter (HT accessed it in the special branch of Jalandhar Commissionrate) to the Jalandhar police commissioner on Thursday, the state’s additional director general of police (security) ordered him to withdraw the singer’s cover “immediately”. On Wednesday, Hans had given a statement to the media that Akali candidate Pawan Kumar Tinu was a “fanatic”. The singer had also said the ticket to the Adampur legislator was a mistake by the party high command.

“The cover, withdrawn on the basis of a fax letter we received on Thursday evening, was restored after a communication on Friday. It was because of a security audit in view of the coming Lok Sabha elections,” said deputy commissioner of police Rahul S.

Belying the claims of the senior police official, information gathered from other districts suggested there was no security audit in Punjab, and if at all, it was only for Hans.
