Health deptt to hold camp to register eateries under Food Act

The district health department will soon organise camps to make grocery shop and sweet owners register themselves under Food Safety and Standard Act, which was notified 17 months back.


The district health authorities held a meeting with nearly 60 heads and other members of grocery and sweet shops on Wednesday to ensure that most such shops are registered with the department.

District health officer Dr Ashwani Sondhi said that the department would hold camps for providing registration in different areas of the district from January 25 at Basti Bawa Khel, January 29- Maqsudan, January 30-Phillaur, Apra, Goraya and on January 31 at Gujjanpur.

"On February 1, two camps will be organised, including Gurmandi and Basti Sheikh. We have given them registration forms to distribute among food business owners in their areas."

According to the act, which was implemented in August 2011, food businesses with an annual turnover exceeding Rs. 12 lakh require a license while earning below that needs registration while milk sellers with 500 l sale requires licence and below needs registration. The fees for registration are Rs. 100, while it varies from Rs. 2,000, 3,000 and Rs. 5,000 for an licence.

"There is also a provision of fine up to Rs. 5 lakh or imprisonment up to six months if an eatery is found running without a licence or a registration," Dr Sondhi said.

Marriage palaces and caterers are also required to get registered or be licenced from the food safety wing.
