Jalandhar railway station- one of the major railway stations of Punjab- often seems crowded, thanks to the improper seating arrangement on both platforms of the station.
The route, which connects Jammu and Bihar, sees a large number of labourers travelling on a regular basis but the seating arrangements have not been able to cater to the growing population that visits the railway station every day.
The actual scenario of inconvenience can be seen in the afternoon when trains like Shatabdi and Shaane-Punjab arrive. Many city residents travel to and fro every day from Jalandhar to Amritsar and also nearby localities and thus are regular passengers who use the city station.
Though the railway administration claims of providing all amenities, a visit to the station refutes all claims. People lying down near the booking counter are a usual sight. One can see passengers, including senior citizens, sitting on the floor.
Not only this, the weighing machine usually placed at the station has turned into seats for the passengers. Though the railway administration has made seating arrangements in the waiting hall, it is hardly used by passengers because of its filthiness.
Kamal Gupta (55), a passenger waiting for Shatabdi said, “Waiting for the train at such an old age is very difficult for me. First, there is no escalator for old people and then there are no seating arrangements. My knee hurts if I stand for a long time so I have no other option but to sit on the floor.”
The railway officials in their defense said platforms do not have adequate space for putting more chairs for the passengers.
