In the wake of deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab, the members of Indian Overseas Congress(IOC) decided to boycott the 3-day NRI Conference being held in Punjab from January 3.

The decision to boycott the conference was taken in a meeting of executive of Indian Overseas Congress, held recently in San Francisco.

"The current law and order of the State, the drug menace, one-sided functioning of the Legislative Assembly, Speaker's discriminatory role against Congress, led to the decision," revealed Kulbir Singh Thind, Joginder Singh Dhillon and Arun Bhandari in a joint release issued on Friday.

"A large number of executive members from USA and Canada attended the meeting," they claimed, urging NRI's to send a strong message to chief minister Prakash Singh Badal, to re-think his strategy on state affairs.

IOC president Vikram Jit Bajwa had sent a request to 156 NRI organisations across the globe, including members of India Caucus, NRI- MP's in Canada and UK, Indo-US Chamber of Commerce, Indo-Canadian Commerce Association, Walmart, Infosys, IBM, American Nuclear Technology Inc., to stand with them and boycott the conference, until the CM convince the people of Punjab and NRIs worldwide, of their policy on 'Voice of Opposition', NRI-properties, legal issues, safeguard of life and investments in Punjab, they claimed.

Punjab government has miserably failed to function as a positive government for its people and NRI's worldwide, and due to this, for the first time, since its inception in 1987, IOC has taken this decision with a heavy heart, they said.
