A sting operation by local people brought the incident to light, after which, police registered a case against the father, Dharma, nursing home receptionist Pooja, and midwife Tara Rani of Katehra Mohalla in Basti Bawa Khel here. Dharma and his wife, Champa, are from Chamba in Himachal Pradesh and live in Katehra Mohalla for the past several years.

A month ago, Dharma, a helper at the cremation ground of Basti Bawa Khel, had three children and his wife was expecting another. Champa was under treatment at Jot Nursing Home, where receptionist Pooja pursued the couple to give away the child for adoption after birth.

"She told the couple that one of her relatives, Sham Kumar, who ran a grocery store at Jawala Nagar in Delhi, wanted to adopt a child, as he was childless for the past 15 years," said a police officer, adding: "A deal was made for `1.5 lakh, and when Champa delivered, the father, with the help of midwife Tara Rani, allegedly took the boy to Sham secretly on September 11 without the legal process of adoption."

Two days ago, Champa talked about the deal with one of her neighbours, who spread the news and they set up a sting operation in which Dharma was caught accepting that he had sold the boy. The neighbours informed police, who came to Bawa Khel and took Dharma into custody.

He told the police about Pooja and Tara Rani. Pooja is under arrested, while a hunt is on for the midwife. From Dharma's house, police also claim to have recovered `1 lakh of the money that was paid. "A team will leave for Delhi on Saturday night to bring back the baby and arrest buyer Sham Kumar," said assistant police commissioner (west) Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu. A case has been registered against Sham Kumar as well.
