"We are thankful to the college which gave us a gem of a person," said Shah Rukh Khan, paying a tribute to 'King of Romance' Yash Chopra as well as his alma mater, Doaba College.

Shah Rukh was here on Wednesday along with co-stars Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, who play the lead roles in the late Chopra's swansong Jab Tak Hai Jaan, scheduled to be released on Diwali.

It was a rare treat for the college management, staff and students to have the trio on the campus, even though they sorely missed Chopra.

Fondly recalling his association with Chopra, Shah Rukh said, "It was always a pleasure working with Yashji. We had a homely atmosphere on the sets. We used to relish paranthas from Yashji's house during shooting."

Shah Rukh addressed the frenzied gathering from the same open air theatre where Chopra used to spend a lot of time during his graduation days. The film icon did his schooling from Government Senior Secondary School, Ladowali Road, Jalandhar, and completed graduation from Doaba College in 1951.

"We have not come here for a promotional event. We are here just to pay him a tribute. We are emotionally attached to him. I am lucky to have worked with such a versatile director and even got a chance to act in his last film," said Shah Rukh.

He said the film team had made its first stop here as a mark of respect to the college and the city where Chopra had grown up. "After this emotional visit, we will start promoting our movie from Thursday," he added.

Shah Rukh thanked the college on behalf of Anushka, Katrina and Chopra's family for inviting them, besides wishing the students success in their careers.

Earlier, when the superstar reached the venue, students started shouting and pushing the barricades in a desperate attempt to shake hands with him. The photographers also jostled in a bid to capture Shah Rukh, Katrina and Anushka on their cameras.

Chander Mohan, president of the college managing committee, presented a photograph of Chopra, clicked at a college function here, to Shah Rukh for handing it over to the master filmmaker's widow, Pamela Chopra.

After a 20-minute stay in the college, the team visited the office of Punjabi newspaper Ajit.
