A 27-year-old man arrested in a drug recovery case died in custody of the Phagwara sub-jail on Thursday night, following which his family members and relatives blocked the National Highway-1 near Phagwara, claiming foul play.

According to police claims, deceased Gurpreet Gopi of Mahal village near here, who was arrested on June 20 by the local police from his house, died in a government hospital where he was admitted to after his sugar level suddenly fell.

However, Gopi’s family alleged that he was falsely implicated in the case and police torture led to his death. Paramjeet Singh, father of the deceased, alleged that police had demanded money from him. The villagers blocked National Highway-1 for nearly two hours at the Sugar Mill here that completely paralysed the traffic movement on the road. Police later diverted the traffic from the local village routes.

The villagers have demanded action against the sub-jail staff members, holding them responsible for death.

Balwinder Kaur, mother of the deceased, alleged that police took his son away, claiming that they would admit him to drug de-addiction centre, but on June 21, cops framed him in a drug smuggling case.

The agitated villagers did not allow postmortem on the body  of the deceased in civil hospital and also fell into altercation with the para-medical staff and doctors.

The villagers were calm down when the local administration declared to conduct a judicial probe into the incident. Sources said sub-judicial magistrate Rupinder Singh began probe into the matter and recorded statements of the bereaved family.
